Popeye – ADOPTED

We named this little man “Popeye” after the cartoon character from long ago.  Not only because of his appearance, but the ‘swaggering’ personality he has as well!  Popeye has been one-eye sighted since birth and does not ‘side scan’.  He doesn’t miss seeing with both eyes because he has never experienced it.  He is 2 -3 years old and only about 6 lbs.

This little man is small, but mighty.  He doesn’t have a clue as to his small size.  Popeye’s approach to the world, other dogs and humans is, “What else ya got?”  He gets along well with most smaller dogs, but has a dominant personality.  He would do better being an only dog, or in a home with another dog who is confident but not dominant and not too submissive either.  He does tend to protect his toys from his canine pals, and can be a little possessive of his human.

Popeye002

Love toys, balls, everything. Has the cutest little bark, very raspy, suits him. Doesn’t bark at every little thing like a lot of toy dogs, mostly when playing. Doesn’t like fireworks, barks at those.  NO KIDS, as he has a tendency to lead with his mouth when uncertain. Needs someone who genuinely knows and loves dogs, and is very patient.

Popeye is pretty much house trained, but does have a marking twitch if he smells another dog had been in the house.  He learns quickly if caught, and when told NO, he understands.   He is good with cats also, but sometimes doesn’t know when to stop, thus annoying his kitty friends.

Popeye will need an owner who will not coddle or spoil him.  They must provide proper leadership and discipline, or else Popeye will be the one telling his human what to do.  He is not a dog who should be allowed to sleep in your bed or sit on your lap right of the bat.  A proper mutual respect relationship must be established before this could be allowed.

Popeye’s adoption fee is $295.  He is Neutered UTD with his vaccinations, dewormed, flea treated, and microchipped.

An adoption application and home visit is required.  Please email us at adoptionsdmrs@yahoo.ca to request an application to be emailed to you.

Captain – Adopted

Captain is adult chihuahua, maybe around 8 yrs old.  He has obviously had a very difficult life.  Surrendered to a shelter,  it became evident that he has been badly abused in the past.  His fear of humans is was strong, especially new people he had not spent time with.

Captain001

Captain is fairly calm, likes to lie around on the couch, under a blanket, or on an available dog bed.
When Captain first came here, we needed to let him drag around a leash for a few days as he would run away from anyone who approached him. He would scream anytime we touched him or tried to pick him up.

After about a week of letting him do his own thing, he began to sit by us on the couch and approach us for gentle pats on the head.   He is learning to trust people again and even sits on the laps of our guests after a couple of hours. Captain is housetrained and has always followed us in and out of the house for potty breaks without a problem. He is kennel trained and leash trained. He does fine with our hairless cat and our four resident Chihuahuas, but does not really like big dogs (although he will tolerate them).

Captain should go to a home with no children, to an owner who is calm and collected.  Captain has improved so much since he came to us.  His fear has somewhat subsided, although every now and then something triggers bad memories for him.  Captain needs a patient, loving home.  One that accepts his fear issues, and understands the reward of being patient with a dog like him.  Once he falls in love with you, he is the sweetest, most loving little dog ever.  He even kisses our faces!

Captain would be best as an only dog, or with a dog that is calm as well.

Captain’s adoption fee is by donation.  He has been neutered, UTD with his vaccinations, dewormed, flea treated.
