America’s Favorite Shelter Contest – Please vote!

It is time again for the America’s Favorite Shelter Challenge….this time you only have to vote once, then send all you pet loving friends, family and co-workers and ECARD right from the site – and ask all of them to vote and keep passing it on!

With as many votes as we can get, we have the chance of winning $10,000.  With this we could build our new facility for the dogs where adopters can come and meet everyone.

With your help and support we have been able to rescue and find wonderful homes for over 300 dogs in the last 2 1/2 years, not to mention the cats and kittens too.  We have been able to provide the best health care to the ones that need it most, those with broken legs, liver shunts, heart problems, blindness, and much more.

Thank You

I wanted to extend a huge thank you to all the folks that helped us with this group of dogs.  It was a long hot drive and a ton of work.

Thanks to Jennifer for being my company and help along the way, and for grooming all the horribly matted dogs. Thank you to Mandarin for babysitting my gang while I was gone!  I hate leaving my kids alone (furkids that is), thanks to Jocelyn for coming over and helping bath and trim the larger dogs the next day!

Thanks to Tricia for helping with transporting doggies to and from the vet, and for taking care of my Shortman all weekend!!  Thanks to Nicole and Melissa for babysitting Jodie while I was away…A big thank you to all the foster people that actually kept their word and fostered for us!!  – you all rock!

Without any of you, I would be more exhausted than I already am.

I would like to also thank Dr. Higgins, Dr. Ochostsky, and Dr. Munjal for seeing Lego at such short notice, and putting up with my paranoid questions.  And to Laura M. at Canada West for being so awesome always!!

Thank you to Gloria and Anthony – your endless kindness and generosity brings tears of joy to my eyes every single time you make a donation to help the needy ones.

Knowing that you are all part of this great team, makes doing all of this so much more rewarding!

Namaste!

Dhana Metta Rescue Society is committed to helping as many animals as we possibly can. From homeless dogs and cats, to special needs, we try to raise enough for every pet that needs help. We were a private rescue for 12 years, and decided to become a non-profit society in 2008.

Since August of 2008 we have rescued and placed 113 cats & dogs into loving forever homes. We always need a bigger team of committed foster families, your no longer needed small dog collars, leashes, crates and other doggie stuff. You can make donations directly to our society by mailing a cheque to #235-2607 Kingsway, Vancouver, BC V5R 5H4, or sponsor a pet through our Petfinder site located at the left hand side of this weblog. You can also donate directly to any one of the veterinary clinics that we work with – Alta Vista Animal Hospital 604 221 5858, or Canada West Veterinary Specialists 604 473 4882. Even the smallest donation helps in many ways!!

The Animal Rescue Site is a “Click to Give” website. You can click on a button to help fund food and care for animals. It’s free, and only takes a second of your time. Click every day!

Petfinder.com is an online, searchable database of animals that need homes, and a directory of more than 12,000 animal shelters and adoption organizations across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Again, we thank you all for helping us win last year, and now we hope you will help again this year by voting for us everyday in the Shelter Challenge.

PROJECT SOMOS

I would like to extend an invitation to all our supporters, readers, friends, and anyone else who visits our blog to check out PROJECT SOMOS.

Hosted by a couple of wonderful, big hearted, loving friends of ours, Greg and Heather. They are  some of the the kindest, most compassionate people that I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.

We are so happy to have connected with them, through our rescue.  We found great people and they found their perfect canine companion.  We extend our love and support to them as they have to us.

Please visit their site and see what they are all about….the more support the better the lives of the children!

Beautiful Puppies looking for forever or foster homes

We have some beautiful rescue puppies coming.  They are darling.  They will be medium sized when fully grown.

We are also looking for committed foster homes for these pups shortly after their arrival on February 6th and March 6th.  If you can open your hearts and homes to give a temporary home to these so deserving babies, please contact us asap for a foster application.

For those who are interesting in providing forever homes and adding a new addition, these pups will make great family pets.  Of course as all puppies they will need the proper training, socialization and love.  Please go to our PetFinder Listings to see their photos and their stories.

As always, an adoption application must be completed, and a home visit is mandatory.

Namaste…Yuana

Shelter Challenge

Thank you to all of our dedicated supporters who made it possible for us to receive a $1000 grant.  Your votes everyday kept us up there, and the animals so deserve it!! THANK YOU SO MUCH….if you were all standing infront of me right now, the hugs and kisses would show my appreciation.

I still and always will believe that rescue should be a communal effort.  It is really sad that there are still a few rescue related people out there who feel that it is “a shame” that we received this grant.  I am still interested in knowing why you feel this way…being that you have never met any of us and have never seen the vet bills we incur. You hear wonderful things about the dogs we have adopted out, and the work we do from other rescue folk,  but you still feel you must be against us.  Is rescue a competition?  Let’s not hide behind a forum – there is a comment section right here. What is it really that irks you all so much?

We work hard, and are 110% dedicated to the animals that come and go through our rescue. Some stay with us for months, or years before they are able to be adopted.  They need training, medical attention, love, food and then some.  And that is what we provide.  How can you feel that this is so horrible?  Our invitation has and will always stand, if you have the courage to come and meet us, sit with us for coffee and get to know us then give us a shout, we are still waiting.

We stand by the work we do, and are proud…and always will be, despite the “nasties” who are always lurking out in the shadows waiting to pounce.

No matter,  each of you have made us who we are today, and for that we thank you.

Here’s the link to the forum where those few rescue related people post their feelings about the grant disbursement: http://brindleweb.com/rescuebb/viewtopic.php?t=21614

None of those people have ever met us….WOW!!

NAMASTE

Chihuahuas in need – Puppy Mill Raid PLEASE GIVE to Help

There is a puppy mill breeder in New Orleans that is going to be shut down for her inhumane practices.  A request has been made asking us to take as many as we can, as fast as we can, after they are raided and the dogs are confiscated.

BUT without the funds to transport these babies to Vancouver, they will be left behind, to ultimately be euthanized, and that would break my heart.

I am asking all of you to close your eyes and put yourselves in the bodies of these little chihuahuas.  Feel their fear, sadness, desperation, pain, illness, and the brief excitement and happiness they experience during their so seldom human encounters.  With your help, we can give these dogs happiness, love, contentment, fulfillment, and a life worth living.

This will be a transport with a high cost.  The exchange rate is again so high, and because the price of gas has increased – the flight fees have also increased….some of you may ask again – if it costs so much, is it really worth it?

My answer is yes, these lives are worth every penny.  If you see them when they arrive, how emaciated, terrified, and sad their faces look – and then see them after a month or so with their new family, you would also feel so rewarded….It is a wonderful feeling.  And again it is so worth it.

Sweet Chihuahuas Video Please Watch

I want to let you all know why I do what I do.   I love all dogs, cats and other critters…..but there’s something about the chi personality and the way they look at you with those lovey eyes, I just can’t resist.  Some may say that there are enough dogs here that need homes, and yes I agree.  That is why we also strive to do all we can to help local dogs as often as we can.

However, in the U.S. there are so many dogs that need our help, and I will not turn a blind eye.  I would not feel good about myself if I said NO to these highly adoptable dogs.  I would not be able to sleep knowing that I left them all behind to ultimately face the death penalty for simply being born.

As I have learned from past experiences, I am sure that there will be a number of folks who will decide to criticize my choice to save these chihuahuas from the United States.  I accept the opinions of others and cannot change the way they feel.  I will stand by quietly and listen, but my heart has always guided me down the right paths, and I choose to follow.

Here I sit, hoping and praying that what I have written helps you understand my view, and that many of you find it in your hearts to help these wonderful chihuahuas find their way to Vancouver.

Anything and everything helps.  Our goal is to raise $5000 for this rescue, and if we raise more than that, we can be sure that other little ones can come too.

You can send your donations to our mailing address, or you can make a direct deposit into Dhana Metta’s Vancity account (branch 2 account #682377 Vancouver).  TO MAKE A DONATION BY PAYPAL, OUR ACCOUNT IS UNDER dhanametta@yahoo.ca AND IT IS UP AND RUNNING!!

PACO (seen above) came to Vancouver from New Orleans in 2007, he was emaciated, dehydrated, and terrified of people, cats, noises and just about everything.  He had no idea about love, affection, even sleeping on a bed.  He slept in corners, sitting up, his eyes always open, to be sure no body was going to sneak up on him to hurt him.

Look at the smile on his face now. He is happy, healthy, loving, and you sure can see it…this is what makes all of what we do so worth every penny….

Bubba on the left and BB on the right hand side.  Bubba was rescued from a Northern BC chihuahua breeder, badly abused at 8 weeks old, puppies should never be so scared of humans.  Bubba loves his new life.  And BB what a doll, she came from New Orleans with Paco, and they are both happy dogs.  A better life forever.

Clover and Sage

Clover and Sage, my original girls…….who started this chihuahua fiasco!!

Help stop the suffering, please donate to help these chihuahuas come to Canada, and please please educate yourselves and all your friends about the negative effects of puppymills….watch the videos on YouTube, remember what you see, and let’s all work together to shut down as many as possible.

Education about Puppymills

I post this video to hopefully educate Belinda on what puppy mills are all about.  If you think confiscating these dogs is actually “stealing them from their owners”, you have a strange way of “loving dogs”.  Do you APPROVE of the conditions in which dogs are kept at PuppyMills and BYB’S??

BELINDA’S  COMMENT (today) :

It sounds as though you are trying to raise money and promoting an illegal theft of dogs that are raised in conditions of which you disapprove. Then, later apparently you plan to remove these stolen dogs not just across state lines, but across international borders? Please, rethink this madness, it is nothing short of domestic terrorism. If you love dogs, donate to your local shelter, or -better yet- donate some of your time to help take care of those local dogs that need you. Please don’t take part in this latest trend of stealing dogs from their owners with publicity so that new, horrible laws are promoted that will end our lives with dogs as we know it; Oprah and Wayne have no love for animals, they only lust for power and control over your choices!

Those who know us and have visited us, get to see for themselves our true love for dogs.  The many adopters who have been to our place to meet and pick up their new family members are those who understand us the best.

BE SURE YOU HAVE THE TIME TO WATCH THIS VIDEO AS IT IS A HALF AN HOUR.
